Riesling
accounts for only 20% of the plantings in Germany, but Riesling planted
on some of the country’s steep, slate hillsides offer wines of the
rarest complexity, delicacy, and elegance. The variety is also planted
in Alsace where the wines tend to be heavier and richer than those of
Germany. In both countries, Riesling is made in a range of styles from
bone dry to intensely sweet. While Riesling is planted sporadically in
other countries, it rarely achieves the stylishness and grace found in
Germany or Alsace.
